So, You Just Moved.
How exciting right? I was so thrilled when we moved into our new home. I had a fresh blank canvas to work with. I couldn't wait to unpack and set everything up. Where do I begin? If you are anything like me and have a new space to work with, I have a few insights to help encourage and inspire you to put your homemaking skills to the test.
Shortly after arriving, I realized, we had a LOT of stuff. I had already went through and sold things before we moved, so how could we possibly still have so much? The Lord has blessed us with many items to help make our lives more convenient. So, I thought to myself, how can I use this space to realistically and efficiently serve my family and home? I will be raising our kids here, so how can I use the things we have and the space we have to teach them and help them grow? After thinking I came up with a few helpful ways to start.
The best way to approach a new space is to first have some inspiration. Are you the DIY type or do you enjoy frolicking in department stores for inspo?
My favorite way to find inspiration is Pinterest. However, there are so many other ways to approach your ideal vision.
First
Take some time to visually unpack. Meaning, look at your space and visualize where you are going to put things. Is this going to help the flow and functionality of the home? Does it align with your vision for the home? Colors, patterns, themes. There is a whole world of ideas just waiting for you to start!
Then
After deciding themes, colors, patterns, etc. It's time to get to work. Cleaning the space prior to setting up is always a good first step. Sweep, vacuum, dust- the works! Then start setting up your things where you visualize them to be and watch your vision come to life. I like setting up lots of plants, accent rugs and tables, wall art/photography. One way to help the home look tidy while also catering to storage and convenience is to use decorative baskets. You can find these at thrift stores, home good stores and even some grocery stores. You can use these for just about anything. Under sink storage, laundry room, kids' rooms, for blankets, and a little basket by the door for house and car keys. Not only does it look lovely, it helps keep things organized.
Finally,
One of my favorite ways to set the tone for our home is the actions that take place in it. Praying, listening to worship music, laughter, cooking homemade meals, and having friends over for fellowship are the ways the home really comes to life. This step is actually, believe it or not, the most important. Having a beautiful, clean and organized home is nice. But, what does it all mean if it's just for our enjoyment? I ask, how can we use our homes to build God's kingdom? Truth is, we can use our homes to bring God glory and be fruitful with our resources. The memories we make in our homes, and the way in which our heart is postured in the very walls of our homes, is what truly makes the home.
I hope this is encouraging to you as you visualize, create and establish your space. Happy Homemaking!
